19/05/2010 20:22

Dr. Chang will be delivering a keynote lecture on "Conservation versus Development – Singapore’s Case" at the School of the Arts: Singapore's  Integrated Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) Camp on 24 May 2010 at 8 a.m.

Here is the abstract

The concept of conservation encompasses both environmental protection and management. The latter supposes that there are environmental problems. This talk explores the existing environmental conditions of Singapore, both urban and natural to critically discuss the ideas of high quality of life, a livable city, and a sustainable city. The Master Plan 2008 and the SGP 2012 will be explored to understand the challenges of conservation in a developmental state. In essence, the speaker argues for conservation that targets Singapore’s greatest resource – human capital. Only through environmental education can we ensure that the future generations have the propensity to further the conservation efforts of today’s agencies and civil society.
